Writesonic Review 2024: How Good Is This AI Writer?

Writesonic ReviewPin

Welcome to our Writesonic review.

Writesonic is one of the best-rated AI writing tools on the market right now—but just how good is it?

We wanted to find out, so we tried it out for ourselves and put together this in-depth Writesonic review with everything you need to know.

First, we’ll explain what Writesonic is and the features it offers. Then, we’ll take a closer look at all those features as we explore the platform.

After that, we’ll talk pricing and share our take on Writesonic’s main pros and cons. And finally, we’ll give you our final verdict on whether or not it’s worth the cost, and why.

What is Writesonic?

Writesonic is a super popular AI writing tool used by over 5 million writers, teams, and agencies.

01 Writesonic HomepagePin

You can use it to craft SEO-optimized, plagiarism-free content 10x quicker with the power of generative AI.

It’s built on OpenAI’s revolutionary GPT-4, which is currently the best large language model (LLM) on the market.

So, it’s capable of producing very high-quality written content that’s just as good (if not better) than anything a human could write at the click of a button.

Now of course, it’s true that if you want to generate content with GPT-4, you could just use something like Bing Chat or the premium version of ChatGPT

But then, you’d be missing out on all the other stuff that Writesonic has to offer.

It comes loaded with all sorts of powerful tools that will make your content creation process easier, like 100+ AI tools/templates, a powerful built-in document editor, an image generator, a chatbot (with real-time search data), a Chrome Extension, and more.

And in general, it’s just much easier to use than those other tools as it’s built specifically for writers and marketers, rather than for general use.

What features does Writesonic offer?

Writesonic comes with a lot of features. The main ones to know about are:

  • Template library
  • AI writer
  • Sonic Editor
  • Brand Voice
  • Botsonic
  • Chatsonic
  • Photosonic
  • Chrome Extension

Next, we’ll take a closer look at each of these features and show you how everything works in the Writesonic app. Let’s dive into it.

Template library

When you first log in to Writesonic, the first thing you’ll see is the AI template library.

Here, you’ll find dozens of different AI-powered tools for different use cases.

02 Template library - AI templatePin

The idea is that you select a template based on the kind of content you’re trying to create, then enter some initial prompts/instructions to guide the AI, and it’ll generate that content for you.

We don’t have time in this post to talk about all the different templates in Writesonic’s library and what they do, but here’s a quick overview of some of our favorites:

  • AI Article Writer 5.0. The latest version of Writesonic’s long-form article generator. Use it to write factual, up-to-date blog posts of up to 2,500 words based on competitor articles or on your own content. You can feed it up to 5 different articles for research and it’ll use what it learns to write the best possible post on the topic.
  • Article Rewriter. Copy-paste an article that you’d like to paraphrase into Writesonic and it’ll rewrite the whole thing from scratch in one click. Useful when you want to freshen up old content for a quick SEO boost.

(There’s also a Content Rephrase template, which does the same thing but changes the voice/style as needed; and a Rewrite With Keywords template, which inserts keywords into the paraphrased version.)

  • Facebook Ads. Craft compelling copy for your Facebook ads in seconds.

(There are similar tools/templates for other types of ads like Google Ads, LinkedIn Ads, etc.)

  • Product Descriptions. Generate short-form descriptions for products in your ecommerce store in any tone in seconds.
  • Instagram Captions. Write engaging captions for your Instagram posts.

(Other templates are available for other types of social media posts, like Twitter Threads, Tweets, TikTok Video Scripts, and more.)

  • SEO Keywords Generator. Generate a list of keyword ideas for your niche/topic that you might want to target in your SEO campaigns.
  • Review Responder. Easily manage your online reputation by automatically generating personalized replies to positive and negative online reviews.

There are lots more aside from the above, including templates for landing pages, SEO meta descriptions, YouTube titles, article summaries, blog ideas, and more.

And if you can’t find a template that does what you’re trying to do, you can just choose the generic Make Your Own AI template and enter your own custom prompts instead.

AI writer

Next, we’re going to test out Writesonic’s AI writer.

As we briefly mentioned earlier, Writesonic’s AI writer is built on OpenAI’s GPT large language model.

However, you can choose which version of GPT you want to use to generate AI content: GPT-3.5 (Premium quality) or GPT-4 (Superior quality). You can switch between them from the dropdown at the bottom of the sidebar.

03 AI writer - GPTPin

GPT-4 is the latest model. So naturally, it provides the best quality output. However, it costs 6x as many credits to use GPT-4 as GPT-3.5.

So for example, if you only have 12,000 words left to generate this month on your plan, that means you can only generate 2,000 words of GPT-4 content.

For this test, we selected Premium quality (the GPT-3.5 version). But just be aware that it’s possible to get better output if you’re prepared to eat up more of your credits.

After you’ve chosen your quality level, the next step is to choose a template. We’ll be using the AI Article Writer 5.0 for this test.

After that, you’ll need to follow the on-screen instructions to fill out the prompts and provide Writesonic with some context about what you want to write about, then hit Generate.

For example, you might be asked to enter a topic or target keyword, provide some reference articles, choose a tone, etc.

For this test, I asked Writesonic to write about ‘AI writing software’ and fed it some links from the top-ranking articles for that keyword on Google search.

04 AI writer - GeneratePin

Writesonic then came back with this pop-up to tell me how many credits it was going to cost, which I thought was pretty neat.

05 AI writer - Pop upPin

Once I’d confirmed that was ok, it got to work writing the article for me. Here’s a preview of what it came back with:

06 AI writer - PreviewPin

It started off with a pretty strong introduction, and then a listicle-style overview of the main benefits of AI writing software. Then, it moved on to a roundup of the best tools:

07 AI writer - Best toolsPin

Overall, this isn’t bad at all. There were a few things that stood out to me as particularly impressive.

First off, I really like the fact that Writesonic structured this like an actual blog post, with HTML markup for things like header tags, bullet points to break up the content, a bolded introductory paragraph, etc.

It’s also really cool that it managed to source royalty-free images and insert them throughout the post, and even credit the source URL underneath them. This is something I didn’t even ask it to do.

All that said, it isn’t perfect. The content is a little dry and doesn’t offer much original insight, so it reads like a generic SEO post.

But with a little editing, it’d be easy to turn this into a very high-quality article.

And that brings me to the next feature…

Sonic Editor

You can edit your AI-generated content, or write content from scratch, inside Writesonic’s Sonic Editor

08 Sonic Editor - AI generated contentPin

The Sonic Editor is kind of like an enhanced version of Google Docs.

It has all the usual formatting options, but it also has a few AI-powered editing tools that you don’t get on normal word processors/text editors.

Highlight any text in the Sonic Editor, then click the AI Shortcuts dropdown, and you’ll see three options: Paraphrase, Expand, and Shorten.

09 Sonic Editor - AI shortcutsPin

Click any of them, and Writesonic will rewrite, expand on, or tighten up your content as needed.

At the top of the page, you can also click the rocket icon to switch from normal editing mode to Sonic mode.

10 Sonic Editor - Rocket iconPin

In Sonic mode, you can access all the AI tools/templates in Writesonic’s library from inside the editor to quickly generate content as you go.

When you’re finished, click the Share button in the top right to download your content, publish it to WordPress or Zapier, or create and copy a public link to your clipboard.

Brand Voice

Brand Voice is a powerful new feature that lets you ‘train’ Writesonic’s AI to write in your personal tone/style.

11 Brand Voice - Tone _ stylePin

To get started, click Brand Voice from the sidebar of the main dashboard, then click New voice.

You have a few options here. You can share the link to a page on your site with Writesonic, and it’ll automatically scrape it to learn about your business and your brand voice.

Alternatively, you can upload files and Writesonic will use that to synthesize your unique tone. Or you can just copy-paste some branded text in.

We fed it a link to another review post on Blogging Wizard, and this is what it came back with.

12 Brand Voice - New voicePin

That sounds about right. Now, if I click Create Voice, I can pre-train Writesonic to always use that tone going forward whenever I generate a new piece of content.

Chatsonic

Chatsonic is Writesonic’s AI-powered chatbot.

13 Chatsonic - ChatbotPin

It’s kind of like ChatGPT, but better. Because, unlike ChatGPT, it doesn’t just rely on its training data.

It can also pull data from Google Search in real time, so it can answer your prompts with up-to-date knowledge from the web.

Plus, it can also understand voice commands, generate AI art from prompts, and more.

All you have to do is enter a prompt, and it’ll spit out a response inside the chat window. You could ask it a question, like this:

14 Chatsonic - PromptPin

Or have it generate content, like this:

15 Chatsonic - Generate contentPin

Photosonic

Photosonic is Writesonic’s AI image generator. You can use it to create original AI art from text prompts. One image costs 100 premium word credits.

16 Photosonic - CreditsPin

You can customize the output by specifying the number of images you want to generate, and the dimensions you want to generate them in.

To try it out, we asked Photosonic to create a portrait of a man holding a dachshund in the style of Frida Kahlo, and this was the result:

17 Photosonic - Frida KahloPin

Ok, so clearly, it isn’t perfect. But I imagine with some careful prompt engineering, you could get some pretty interesting results.

Botsonic

Botsonic is Writesonic’s no-code AI chatbot builder.

To use it, click Botsonic from the sidebar, then Create your first bot.

Next, you can train Botsonic on your own data by adding links to your knowledge base, website, sitemap, etc. And you can customize the design and tone of voice to match your brand.

18 Botsonic - Create your first botPin

Once you’ve built your chatbot, you can add it to your website easily via embeddable scripts or APIs.

Writesonic pros and cons

After trying out Writesonic, here’s a summary of what we think its main pros and cons are:

Writesonic pros

  • Excellent tool/template library. Writesonic has one of the largest libraries of AI tools we’ve seen. As such, it’s super versatile and can be used to write everything from articles to video scripts, song lyrics, and pretty much anything else you can think of. Its Article Writer tool is particularly powerful
  • High-quality output. In our tests, Writesonic consistently generated very high-quality content that was almost as good as something a professional writer could produce. And that’s using the Premium quality setting—it gets even better when you use Superior quality.
  • Sonic Editor. Writesonic’s Sonic Editor is one of the best built-in document editors we’ve seen in any AI writing software. It’s like an enhanced version of Google Docs, with AI-driven editing tools to make it even easier to polish up your content, and one-click WordPress publishing.
  • Great value for money. Writesonic offers more features than most of its competitors for a fraction of the cost, which makes it excellent value for money. And its free plan comes with a generous 10,000 words/month limit.
  • Easy to use. Writesonic couldn’t be easier to use. Just log in, choose a template, enter some prompts, and hit generate. Then, polish up your content in the editor and publish it in one click. There’s no learning curve whatsoever and everything is super intuitive.

Writesonic cons

  • No out-of-the-box SEO tips. Writesonic’s Sonic Editor doesn’t offer SEO scoring or optimization suggestions natively. If you want these features, you’ll need to connect Writesonic to SurferSEO first, which you’ll need to purchase separately. However, this is the case with a lot of AI writers.
  • Unlimited plan is GPT-3.5 only. Unfortunately, Writesonic’s Unlimited plan only lets you generate Premium quality content (GPT-3.5). For Superior quality content (GPT-4.0), you’ll need to sign up for the Business plan, which doesn’t come with unlimited words.

Writesonic alternatives

Writesonic might not be the right choice for every business. Here are some alternatives that might be a better fit.

  • Rytr | Our review – This easy-to-use but powerful AI-powered writing assistant offers a great balance between affordability and functionality. Stands out for its generous free plan and very affordable Saver and Unlimited plans.
  • Frase | Our review – The best option for content marketers that want AI + content optimization in the same tool. Use it to generate AI-written content and optimize it for search with SEO tips and SERP analysis.
  • Jasper | Our review – Another popular AI writer, built on a cross-section of all the best language models including GPT-4, Anthropic, and Google’s LLMs.

Final thoughts on Writesonic
