If you are looking for a WordPress theme that is versatile and can fit any purpose, then look no further than Specular – a popular multipurpose theme.
With numerous customization options, online template builder and the ability to create different layouts for any of your pages, Specular is sure to please even the most demanding users.
Let’s take a closer look at this theme and see exactly what it has to offer.
Choosing a quality WordPress theme that is responsive as well as customizable can sometimes prove to be quite daunting; especially, if you want to tweak more than just your background image and header; without writing code yourself or hiring a developer to customize the theme to your liking.
This is where Specular comes in. Specular is a premium theme from ThemeForest, that comes packed with options. Among core features are fully responsive layout, dedicated support team, comprehensive documentation, WooCommerce support, several in-built sliders to choose from, and numerous customization options – all without having to know a single line of code.
Let’s take a look at everything Specular has to offer.
Theme installation and setup
Installing the theme is pretty straightforward, like with any other theme. However, after the installation, you are prompted to install additional plugins to get the most of the theme.
When you are done installing the necessary plugins, the theme is ready for you to use.
Theme options are all neatly tucked away in their own section in the left hand side menu, which can also be accessed from the top menu in the admin bar.
As you can see from the screenshot above, everything can be tweaked and customized to your liking: from header, typography, footer, blog layout, styling options… Every aspect of the theme can be fine tuned to your needs, whether you are using Specular as a personal blogger, corporate website, portfolio site – the theme is truly versatile.
However, it doesn’t stop there. Once you get to creating static pages, such as the About Page or even a custom Home Page, your options are really limited only by your imagination. It comes with an inbuilt visual composer which allows you to create your own layout for any static page on your blog, and each of the pages can have a different layout.
Every part of visual composer is basically drag and drop, and uses sliders to fine tune the little details. Even those dabbling for the first time in WordPress should have no issues when it comes to creating a unique layout.
Portfolio section of the theme comes with 30 different layout possibilities, not to mention Specular is equipped with its own slider which showcases your images in a stylish way.
Online template builder
One neat feature of Specular is that it comes with the option to choose your own layout and customize it and then simply import the customized template into your theme. They currently offer 26 different layouts to choose from; and you can change the styling options for any of them to your liking.
When you are done playing with all the options, simply export the options as a text file, go to your Dashboard, and import them under Import/Export menu in Specular theme options menu. Be sure to check the drop down and select the option to import from online builder. Note that you will have to paste the contents of the downloaded export file from the online builder.
Other notable features
Specular comes with unlimited header styles, includes WooCommerce and Contact Form 7 – two very popular plugins, support for WPML and Mailchimp plugins, Google Fonts, 4 icon packages to choose from, support for video backgrounds, and last but certainly not least – Specular is SEO optimized.
I have to honestly admit that this is one of the very few themes I have seen to date with such numerous customization options, not to mention a very detailed documentation that covers every, and I do mean EVERY little aspect of the theme options and possibilities.
Ease of use
Overall, the theme is simple and straighforward to use, from installation down to making the changes in order to create a theme that is truly your own.
For those who are looking to get a lot out of a WordPress theme without spending a lot of time feeling like they are running into one obstacle after another, Specular is a great theme.
From a developer’s point of view, this is a theme that you could easily spend hours playing in depth with all the options, and one that you could use time and time again for different clients when you are pressed for time or facing clients with a low budget.
Specular theme pro’s and con’s
- Thorough documentation
- Easy to customize
- Numerous options
- The ability to create custom layouts
- The ability to customize a pre-existing template
- Despite all the options, doesn’t appear cluttered and loads fast
- Even though the theme is easy to use, the sheer number of customization options can be perceived as overwhelming for someone completely new to WordPress
- Although it comes with several custom post types such as Portfolio, FAQ, Slides, it doesn’t have the ability to create your own custom post type – this can easily be overcome with a plugin
- Visual composer is hidden under the Settings menu which makes it somewhat confusing to find
Specular promises to deliver a lot and I have to say that overall the theme lives up to it. The customization options are quite powerful, yet easy enough to understand even for someone new to theme customizations. The drag and drop interface is easy to manipulate and the documentation is thorough and leads you through every step of the way, should you encounter difficulties.
If you are looking for a truly customizable theme that lets you control every aspect of the theme, look no further than Specular.
